The UNICEF Donation Project

Spreading kindness on campus.
By: Momoko 11.1

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has been steadily achieving their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ever since it was created to ensure that children all over the world have access to their fundamental rights. UNICEF is one of the biggest organizations that focuses on a wide range of issues around the world. They provide us, the lucky privileged people, with ways to connect and support people suffering in pain in different places of the world.

Founded in 1946, UNICEF has accomplished a lot of goals ever since it was established. According to the UNICEF website, over 23 million children were protected against the threatening disease of measles with vaccines. It was bought with the donated money. School books and education facilities were given to schools in developing countries. It was bought with the donated money. They are holding a donation campaign to distribute COVID-19 vaccinations to protect the most vulnerable workers and children all over the world. They are buying the vaccines with the donated money. To conclude, for 76 years UNICEF has been providing warmth to people’s hearts and supporting people to have human rights. However, unlike other organizations, UNICEF “rely entirely on charitable donations”. They could not have achieved any goals without people’s donations. UNICEF’s strongest tool is the donated money; they have been helping the children “who need it the most” with money provided by us. This is the reason why we must contribute to this organization.

109.4 million pounds (5 billion Thai baht) was raised by UNICEF in 2019. This is a huge amount of money, and UNICEF has used this money as a tool to help countless vulnerable children. A month ago, the year 12s were running a donation project for UNICEF on this campus! Youngseo and Yuxin oversaw this project, spreading awareness throughout Regents.

There are some questions worth considering if you want to contribute to the community:

What are the reasons to donate?

The answer is simple: it is because there is an overwhelming number of problems all around the world, especially in places like underdeveloped countries. Those problems are often very difficult to solve and most of the time eat up a ridiculous amount of money to reach the solution. How will your money help?

1. There are some people who are still not protected against harmful diseases, including:

  • COVID-19

  • AIDS/HIV

  • Malaria, etc.

Though this includes problems such as poverty and low standard of living, the third SDG, ‘Good Health and Well-Being' hopes to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for everyone at all ages (although this remains unachieved, it is hoped that an impact will be made by 2030.)

2. Countless children who still have less or no access to education.

UNICEF recognizes this through the “Quality of Education”, using lots of the donated money to reduce the inequalities within the system of education. 3. The issues of climate change which affects countless people around the globe.

It is said that the children of the generations to come are going to need to “bear the greatest burden of its impact,” which explains the topic’s importance to UNICEF. The rapid growth of a country is causing a change in climate which causes a threat to the natural environment. Not only will people have a negative impact from it, but so will wildlife and fragile ecosystems.

The money raised by UNICEF is a symbol of kindness; people from all over the world donated money to help defenseless children. Now, it is your turn to stand up and become a hero for a person living somewhere, needing your support.
