Wildfire in Hawaii

Updated: Apr 1

The effects of the Maui wildfire

By: GaiEun, Year 9

On the 8th of August, 2023, a devastating wildfire started in the hills above Hawaii’s historic oceanfront town, Lāhainā, causing fatal impacts to its economy. As of now, the fire has consumed over 17,000 acres including portions of various natural reserves such as Haleakala National Park, and numerous farmlands. Although there had only been a few reports of casualties, several structures, including hotels, tourist attractions, and resorts, got burnt into ashes, along with copious crop industries, as a result of the wildfire. Considering its aftermath, it is anticipated that the wildfire will have a significant impact on Hawaii’s economy.

How do the wildfires affect the locals in Hawaii? Of course, the obvious thing is that people lose houses, land, and much more. But, this devastation has also caused damage to crop cultivation. But how is this a big problem? This impact on farmers in local food production crops will take years to rebuild. Resulting in a huge decline in Hawaii's food supply, which is a huge concern since 1.4 million people are living there. Wildfires, such as the record-breaking blazes that went through the islands of Maui, Big Island, and Oahu have impacted a huge amount of agricultural productivity in the short and long term, according to a research study by agricultural economists. These crops are an essential component of the food supply system and the impacts on crops will mostly be local. The wildfire has destroyed 2,000 homes and experts say private wells in the area will be contaminated by the fire, because of their shallowness. This causes many communities a problem since their water source is or will be contaminated by the wildfire.

Tourism is also another sector that the Maui wildfire has influenced. As tourists who had planned to visit Hawaii were forced to reconsider their trips due to safety concerns, hotel bookings plummeted, and popular tourist attractions, such as Haleakala National Park, had to be temporarily closed. Not only the hotels & popular tourist attractions, but other businesses such as restaurants and souvenir shops also witnessed a huge decrease in foot traffic due to the fire, resulting in heavy financial losses. According to officials, the loss from business closures and visitor expenditures is estimated to be almost $11 million per day in Maui since August 9, which is approximately 400million in Thai baht.

Analysts predicted that it would take a very long period of time for Hawaii’s tourism to recover from the negative publicity associated with the incident, even after the fire had extinguished.

In reply to the potential long-term effects, Hawaii’s government is putting a lot of effort in regaining trust and promoting Hawaii. Mike Romero expressed, “Maui is grateful for the outpouring of support we have already received from our loyal visitors, fervent locals, and the global community. We are working diligently to restore Maui’s natural beauty and guarantee a memorable experience for those who choose to visit.”
