The Effect of Newcastle United's Ownership

Newcastle’s ownership is a shock to the Premier League and poses a deeper threat than Manchester City.

The new owners of Newcastle have threatened to challenge the traditional top six football clubs in England and to have an even larger impact than Manchester City. The image of Newcastle will be sure to change in the coming few seasons as they transition from a classic football club with limited stories of success, to a global powerhouse who will accept nothing but trophies. Seeing that this is the vision of new age football owners, it’s either all in or all out.

The public investment fund is the sovereign wealth of Saudi Arabia who have now taken majority of ownership of Newcastle United and taken them to the top of the food chain. The wealth of the Saudi family is immeasurable compared to the owners of today's game, and this point is the one which will shock the premier league elitists. With Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester City, and the latter of which is only a recent inclusion into this group of clubs who have a grip on the English game. The new age of football ownership, which has seen ‘the beautiful game’, became a playground for the rich, and has seen the traditional rich clubs who have gained notoriety, money, and fame of merit through success against the likes of Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain, and Red Bull Leipzig.

An example of this money-infused transition would be the likes of Manchester city who have risen through the ranks from mid-table mediocrity to 5-time premier league champions. They were taken over by the Abu Dhabi Group in 2008 and they had an idea to challenge the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United soon by investing millions of pounds into the club, attempting to take them into footballing supremacy. The club has achieved this goal now, joining the list of top football clubs in the world and with the funds that Newcastle has access they could use this scenario as a template to future success.

This new era will have its difficulties but as we have seen from previous examples, money wins trophies. This hope that all football fans hold onto so dearly will become expectation for this club and its fans as they battle through the table to eventually have their name amongst the best. This club who haven't had true success since the early 2000’s and even though they have seen legends such as Alan Shearer fly the black and white high with his 260 premier league goals or the likes of Jackie Milburn, they haven't had a team to be proud of in a long time, and hopefully this newfound wealth will give them that.
