Teen Wolf Revival: Prolepsis in the Making

Will a film answer every question?
By: Anjali 10.3

The series finale of MTV’s Teen Wolf aired on September 24th, 2017, after running for over 6 successful years. While the 100th and final episode was a pleasant ending to the show, many dedicated viewers would say that it was rather abrupt conclusion to an otherwise well-written, and even transcendent, series.

The plot itself was loosely derived from the 1985 film, also titled Teen Wolf. It revolves primarily around a student named Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) in a fictional town called Beacon Hills. The show follows the protagonist, along with some of his friends, (Dylan O’Brien, Holland Roden, Crystal Reed and many more) as they find themselves in an array of inexplicable, dangerous situations.

Countless subtle questions were left unanswered after the finale, particularly including the current lifestyles of all characters. One could argue that several of these were indirect and inadvertent cliff hangers that the writers didn’t intend to create. However, following the recent announcement of a revival movie allegedly coming to Paramount+, devoted followers of the supernatural teen-drama immediately began speculating.

Various fans have referred to one of the main characters throughout the series’ 6 seasons: Stiles Stilinski (Dylan O’Brien). Stiles was arguably one of the most cherished characters on the show. Unlike the majority of the other characters, he did not have any supernatural abilities. But, as the series approached its end, Stiles was shown training to join the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation). Although it has not been confirmed yet, anticipators have been partially reassured that Dylan O’Brien will be reprising the role as a result of the character’s iconic jeep being showcased in the recently released teaser. However, due to a lack of his presence in the last few seasons, Stiles Stilinski’s whereabouts remain a mystery. Most assume that O’Brien’s absence was a result of a severe injury he experienced while filming a scene for another one of his projects: the final instalment of the Maze Runner film series.

Another leading character – Kira Yukimura – was introduced in season 3 and was also initially considered to not have any mysterious capabilities until later in the show when she is revealed to be a kitsune. In the last season, Kira (Arden Cho) goes to live with a group of supernatural creatures called the Skinwalkers in order to master her powers. Although the character was not present in the show for more than a few seasons, fans and critics were displeased with her sudden departure, notably after considering the fact that she didn’t return for or make an appearance in the finale. Millions are awaiting the reboot, solely due to the predictions that it may finally allow the writers to find a way to incorporate Kira back into the plot.

Potentially the biggest mystery to be explained in the film, however, is Alec. Alec was a character (played by Benjamin Wadsworth) who only appeared in the final episode. According to the show’s creator Jeff Davis, Alec “represents the future of Scott McCall’s Pack”. Evidently, this statement would leave viewers curious as to whether or not he will be present in the film and if a more detailed backstory will be given about the character if he is.

The explanations for all of these unanswered questions amongst numerous others cannot possibly be squeezed into a single, 1.5 to 2-hour movie… can they?
