Peshawar Mosque Bombing in Pakistan

Many injured in the recent bombing of mosque

By: Shara 11.1

The Peshawar bombing that recently happened in Pakistan had a huge impact on the mosque and over 300 people involved. The mosque is within a tightly guarded police headquarters, and it is a heavily controlled area of the city.

The attacker was in police uniform and rode in on a motorcycle. He had managed to get through multiple police barricades manned by security officers without alarming anyone. The bomber had detonated the explosive in front of hundreds of people while they were doing their afternoon prayer.

The blast had taken place around 13:30 (08:30 GMT) and half a wall and the roof of the mosque had been destroyed. The mosque was buried in debris and bricks whilst people tried saving themselves and climbed out of the ruins to break free. The explosion mostly injured police officers and it is believed that they were the target of the bombing.

"Terrorists want to create fear by targeting those who perform the duty of defending Pakistan," said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. (BBC News, 30th January by Carrie Davis in Peshawar) This is said to be one of Pakistan’s deadliest attacks recently.

This was not the first bombing that Pakistan had encountered. In December 2022, there had been another suicide bombing that killed one police officer. And in 2017, the Parachinar bombing injured over 300 people at a marketplace. Due to the recurring bombings, many believe that the Pakistani Taliban are behind it since the group had ended a ceasefire with the government and had threatened more violence in the country. Although, they denied any involvement after the said claim. Unfortunately, many terrorist attacks and bombings have happened in recent years. The government ensures the security and safety of the citizens, but it continues to be a significant threat in the country.

Those who were severely injured were taken in stretchers to the nearest hospital and were tended to there. Those who passed away are prayed for, and families and friends are distraught over the occurrence. As a community, we can donate to help Pakistan in its times of need and help spread awareness about the frequent violent attacks against government officials and citizens to help bring justice for the innocent citizens who passed.
